Chris.
Jacob's physical struggle in his lonely time was with an Angel, many would see this Angel as the Lord Himself! The struggle was so intense that it permanently and physically affected Jacob.
There are very few people on Earth today who have had this kind of experience. If they did have this, or a similar kind, of encounter with the Lord, it would really show by the change that took place in their lives.
Jacob did not talk much, or write about this encounter, it was so obvious to those people who knew him that something had happened. Sometimes, today, there are sensational books written, or stories told, about people's encounters with the Lord or His Angels, I do not accept all these stories. It is much better for other people to see the difference in the claimant's life and to ask them: "What has happened to you?"
No-one particularly enjoys lonely times, these times, however, can possibly be times when God chooses to encounter us in some specific way.
Jacob was alone at the time of his encounter, some people live alone in their latter days, completely alone, and yet are happy because they are in the Lord. Other people spend much of their lives living alone and they retain their God-given abilities, these people also, are basically happy. Lonely environment is not a hindrance to our encountering God in some way.
Whether we live in family, community, or alone, we can expect, if we are Believers in the Lord, to have encounters with Him in some way, this expectation makes me very happy and Blessed! This encounter may not be very dramatic, all of our senses and faculties may not be involved, but when we have such an encounter, our way and manner of life will surely change.
