Chris.
Our Lord Jesus was humble and bold enough to show Himself as an example to us and for us. In His days of walking and serving on this Earth, there were very few masters who would wash the dirty feet of their servants. When He did this, He was also Teaching by action, He wanted the Disciples to learn to humbly wash one another's feet.
Today, "washing of feet" is not really relevant, unless the feet that are to be washed are dusty and dirty. In most of the "foot washing" services that are held in our Churches and seminars, the attendees' feet are "squeaky clean". Some people wash their feet very carefully before a "foot washing" service!
The servant who washed people's feet in Bible days had a most unpleasant job, because those feet were really, rough, sweaty and dirty from the dusty roads.
Alternatives today could be, washing someone's car, helping to clean someone's home or making a visitor feel very comfortable.
We can 'wash the feet' of new attendees in our Churches by making them feel at home and we can 'wash the feet' of new or fellow attendees in Church or in seminar, by giving them an appropriate welcome drink, cake or gift. (How lovely, if people who give out bulletins at the Church door also were to give out a welcome drink and light snack if the attendees would like one!) This is 'washing the feet' of those people coming to Worship. Also, how lovely, if Churches had some people who took it in turns on Sundays to carefully wash car exteriors of any dirty cars parked in the Church car park during the Worship service. This, again, is the washing of feet of the folks coming to Church.
